  1. First you’ll need to gather supplies – You will need your medication vial obtained from your refrigerator, 1 syringe, two alcohol swabs, and 1 bandaid
  2. Notice that your vial is not completely full, this is normal
  3. Wash your hands
  4. Set up your supplies, open both alcohol swabs and your bandaid
  5. Remove your vial from the bottle
  6. Using 1 alcohol swab clean the rubber stopper on the top of the vial in a firm circular motion for a couple of seconds
  7. The top of your vial is now clean
  8. Next remove and discard the wide orange cap on the syringe covering the plunger, dispose of this
  9. Next you will remove the cap from the needle and discard, once a needle is uncapped it is not recapped and is now in the process of being used for injection
  10. Hold your syringe in one hand and with your other hand, hold the vial firmly to a hard surface
  11. With the hand holding the syringe, at a 90 degree angle press the needle through the rubber stopper
  12. Gently turn the vial and needle upside down keeping steady grip on the vial with one hand and the syringe with the other hand
  13. With the hand holding the syringe, pull down on the plunger to withdraw the medication into the syringe to your current prescribed dose. If your dose is 2.5mg, you will draw until the syringe fills to the 25 unit line mark.
  14. If you notice an air bubble in your syringe, you may push the medication back into the vial and resume pulling back into your syringe. If this remains a problem, it may be that the needle is too far into the vial to pull out the solution and you may need to pull back on the needle gently and attempt withdrawing again. Do this carefully as to not remove the needle from the vial until you have drawn up the correct amount. As you continue pulling product each week from your vial, you will need to adjust your needle to accommodate being able to remove solution from the inverted vial. Always being careful not to remove the needle to risk poking yourself.
  15. Once you have drawn up your correct dosage, gently remove the needle from the vial
  16. Keep the syringe in your dominant hand
  17. If your needle gets dropped on the floor or touches anything but the cleansed top of your vial or alcohol wipe cleansed skin, it is contaminated and you must throw into your sharps container otherwise you become at risk for introduction of bacteria and infection.
  18. Wipe your skin with the second clean alcohol swab
  19. You will be injecting into your belly fat, some patients prefer to pinch a portion of fat to inject into, but do be careful to not accidentally poke yourself in the opposite hand if you choose this.
  20. You will then inject into the right or left lower fatty portion of your belly. You will alternate sides each week.
  21. Hold the syringe as if you were holding a dart, DO NOT PLACE YOUR FINGER ON THE PLUNGER UNTIL READY TO INJECT, steadily Press the needle into your cleansed area of skin until the plastic hub touches your skin, then move a finger to the plunger and steadily inject the medication
  22. Once injected, remove the needle and discard the syringe into your sharps container
  23. Apply a bandaid if needed
